Member Spotlight: Meet Anne Mandell
1. What inspired you to start Cereal Dreams?
I initially had the idea about 20 years ago! I was pregnant with my son and was craving all my favorite childhood foods, including cereal. I remember wishing there was somewhere I could go and get all my favorite cereals at once - like an all-cereal restaurant. I quickly talked myself out of it, but kept an eye on this concept over the years. In 2023, I decided to pursue this dream.
2. Can you tell us about the unique concept behind your business?
There are other cereal restaurants out there. At Cereal Dreams, when we create a cereal buffet, we want cereal to be a real meal, not just a sugar-fest (although it can be!). We provide so many options - some will be new cereals our customers haven’t tried, others will be ones they remember in their childhood but haven’t had in forever. Our Cereal Treats are elevated ways to eat your favorite cereals, and best of all gift them to others. We’ve perfected the treat so it is more than what most people can do in their own kitchen.
3. Who are some of your ideal customers?
If you’re hosting a party and looking for something different - a cereal buffet is for you. The cereal buffet appeals to all ages from young people to college kids to older adults. You’ll excite the crowd and offer something unexpected. We’ve had customers from bar/bat mitzvah parties to tenant appreciation events. Our cereal treats make great party favors, hostess gifts, or anytime you need something on-theme or branded (e.g. a certain color you’re planning a party around, your logo, etc).
4. Can you share any interesting stories or experiences from running Cereal Dreams?
The stories people have around their memories of cereal get me every time. Cereal brings nostalgia and I’ve had so many interesting conversations with people about their histories and what they remember. I see it spark an emotional response when customers get their treats or experience the buffet. I’ve loved connecting with people over these stories and emotions.
5. What are your plans for expansion or growth in the future?
I’d loved my own space eventually and I want it to be a place where you can get cereal as a healthy, nourishing meal. My focus for the next six months is leveraging the connections I’m making and the experiences I’m having. I’m always looking for new, creative synergies. I want more people to connect with Cereal Dreams.
6. What advice would you give to someone looking to start their own food business?
I try to not operate out of fear. I try to focus on my belief in this idea and to make my own luck. When starting a new business, you have to put yourself out there and reach out to people. So far, I’ve found that this passion and outreach has compelled a lot of people to try Cereal Dreams.
7. Lastly, what’s your all-time favorite cereal?!
Easy one - Captain Crunch Berries
